You must pass your theory test before
being able to book your practical driving test.
It makes sense to book your test well in advance as waiting times are
long and it often takes a couple of months to be allocated a test slot.
You can either book your practical driving test
online
or by phone on 0300 200 1122.
The test
The practical driving test takes around 40 minutes and during that time,
you will be asked to demonstrate that you are a safe driver. You will be
asked to perform a number of special manoeuvres, such as reverse parking,
reversing around a corner and making an emergency stop. The examiner will
also ask you one "show me" and one "tell me" question. These questions aim
to make sure you know how to check that you car is safe to drive. The specific
"show me tell me" questions can be found on the
DSA website.
Passing requirements
In order to pass your test, you must have no serious
faults and no more than 15 minor faults. Your driving
instructor will advice you when he or she believes you
are ready to take the practical driving test. Given that
the current national average pass rate is less than 45%,
it makes sense to be well prepared and make sure you have
taken sufficient number of driving lessons before you take
your practical driving test.
